Reflections on the True Meaning of the Winter Solstice

We approach the sacred time of year when the Sun begins its Journey north. A time when there are those who take the commitment to assist mankind. Like them, we can to turn towards the Sun. Assist in rejuvenating the noblest in ourselves and others for we are, each, on our own initiatory journey. Reflect on the true meaning of the Winter Solstice and, however small, put our weight to assisting the upward force created at this special time.

…We are all light-bringers and all light-takers; we are all learners and all teachers; all givers and receivers. Yet how quickly even this can be misunderstood. If we begin to feel that we have a certain light which now we must shed on others, that very moment the interchange is muddied. Spontaneity is the key, none other; it happens without our awareness, and that is the wonder of it: a spontaneous interpulsation from heart to heart…

Oral wisdom reports that teachers, messiahs, avataras and guides are traditionally ‘born’ at the winter solstice when, in the darkest nights the star of enlightenment points the way, inspiring the wise of every age to become as they; a risen Christos, an awakened Buddha, a winged Quetzalcoatl, a single eyed Odin- illumines men who having drawn from the well of primeval truth returned to live and work among their people on the chance that a few, at least, would heed the deeper call…Tradition records a few of these exalted ones – Krishna, Sankara and Jesus, their teachings, though impaired by the ravages of human limitation, remain to inspire millions to follow their lead…let us remember the lesser ‘descents,’ the minor l fusions that do occur, if only momentarily, whenever the soul succeeds in making union with its divine source. We tend to overlook the further possibility that even within the very small compass of a truly sincere aspirant, his own avataric1 radiance May, at times, send a shimmer of light upon the way before him.

The Light-Bearers

1 That which passes down or descends; the passing down of a celestial energy or an individualized complex of celestial energies — a celestial being — in order to overshadow and illuminate a human …

our thoughts at this season reach back in the millions of years, to the third great race when, prior to mānasaputric 1lighting of mind in the vast majority of us, certain ones, “Sons of Wisdom” from earlier manvantaras 2 , imbodied themselves among the then mindless humanity and produced by an act of will “a wondrous Being”, and after him a group of half-gods and half- men. It is from this Brotherhood, this seeding-ground of “future human adepts, that all the spiritual sages and rishis3 have come forth, to transmit in fresh form the ancient science of enlightened living; in short, to quicken anew the embers of altruism and the love of truth. Can there be a nobler duty – any higher dharma4 – than gratitude to the Light-bearers of all time, for the unbroken line of Protectors and Guardians?

We are not asked to try to become chelas5 or to attempt to stimulate the seeds of adeptship that are latent in every earnest aspirant. Those will germinate in their own good time. Our task is simple yet glorious: to reduce as far as humanly possible attachment to person, for in proportion as we are able to jettison non essentials and get down to the zero-point of our being will the higher impersonal energies from our inner divinity stream down into and through every portion of our constitution. So exquisite in design is nature’s economy, that our selfless aspirations to ameliorate human sorrow pass both inward and outward simultaneously: inward, to nourish our god-essence, and outward, to sustain the efforts of all who have a genuine care for their fellow humans…

The Quality of Motive

…one thing we are deeply assured of, and that is that each of us will be held strictly accountable for the quality of our motive. With every passing moment we are unconsciously sending forth seed ideas, elemental energies, which, taking root as and when they will, have capacity to nurture or retard in and on our own auric egg1 but by virtue of the continuous circulations of our life atoms are they automatically registered in and through the astral substance of the earth’s auric egg. In other words, because the astral light is a picture gallery of the thoughts and feelings of every human being who has ever lived, it projects at times upon the mass consciousness of humanity both the lower as well as the higher currents of the human psyche. Therefore, what one is is vastly important. I wonder if we realise how greatly we strengthen others by our quiet yet stalwart response to the noblest within us; and contrariwise, how cruelly we affect for I’ll possibly untold numbers of human beings in the grip of fear or weakness when we ourselves sink to a quality of thought or behaviour that is below our best…

Let Your Love Penetrate

Gautama Buddha said : Let your love penetrate first to one quarter of the world, then to a second, a third and to the fourth until it encompasses all beings everywhere. At this beautiful season which heralds the birth of another solar year, millions of people do just this, without prompting – not as a formal rite, but as a spontaneous gift of the heart. The very outreach of concern lifts the thought atmosphere of the globe, for love is healing; it regulates disturbed equilibrium and, when pure of selfish intent, goes far to dissolve those mental and emotional knots that are at the root of destructive tensions. Well do we know that the thoughts we send forth will affect not only our own character and future destiny, but also in some degree the course of countless others who are in sympathetic vibration. For thoughts are life-sparks and in their circulations in and through the auric egg 1 of the earth leave their impress on the astral light 2, for good or ill. Indeed, the karma of all is amazingly inter-webbed; “the stars are beautiful because of a flower that cannot be seen” (Saint Exupéry).
