appeared in Compass over the years.

Trust Your Self
"...earnest seekers of truth need to be armed with extra caution
and discrimination when searching and choosing amongst the plethora of
alluring "Body, Mind and Soul" literature, so called spiritual
centres and guides..."
Has He No Conscience?
"How can a human being bring himself to capture and hurt a fellow
creature?...Consciousness differs in strength and degree from one individual
to another."
Trailing Clouds of Glory
"Trailing clouds of glory" is the secret and source of a child's
innate trust and sincerity. Adults who have children in their care have
a sacred responsibility to help them cherish and nurture their precious
birthright."
The Torchbearers
"The roots of today's modern Olympic custom of the solar-derived
flame passing from runner to runner, lie with the ancient Greeks when
they acted out the drama of transmitting the light of spiritual knowledge."
The Man in the Mirror
"Sometimes I think that people seem to need conflict in their lives.
And war between nations and within nations is just the enlargement of
the petty squabble that arises from lack of intolerance, lack of communication,
compassion, understanding and respect."

Words of Hope and Encouragement
Winter 1997 |
|
.Nothing is gained, but a good deal is lost by impatience
- not only strength, but also sight and intuition. So decide nothing
hastily. Wait; make no set plan. Wait for the hour to make the decision,
for if you decide in advance of the time you tend to raise a confusion.
So have courage, patience hope, faith and cheerfulness.
.You can solidify your character by attending to small things.
By attacking small faults and on every small occasion, one by one.
This will arouse the inner attitude of attention and caution. The
small faults and small occasions being conquered, the character
grows strong.
.There is never any need to worry. The good law looks out
for all things, and all we have to do is our duty as it comes along
from day to day.

To Light A Thousand Lamps
Autumn 2001 |
|
"
.thousands of people of dissimilar interests and backgrounds
are discovering they are on the same wavelength; they are fired
with the urgency to add their strength to turning humanity from
senseless self-destruction to self-regeneration. Instead of fighting
against the conditions that bred hatred and wars, they are labouring
for the safeguarding of human dignity and self-worth, for the protection
of our planet, and for the building of a new type of civilisation
founded on the integration of talents and qualities rather than
on divisiveness

Autumn Equinox Message from an American Friend
Autumn 2000 |
|
The philosophy that the world is essentially evil and that we must
shield ourselves against its influences by a protective wall can
only be true for timid souls. The driving force in the world is
for good. If this were not so the human race would never have reached
its present state of advancement, as imperfect as it is. The fact
that we realise its imperfections is a true indication that the
Force for good is at work. In being the instruments of this Force,
we carry out our divine mission much more effectively by entering
the creative struggle in the open world where victory has its most
telling effect.
"We need not go to the mountain of God to see the burning bush,
the entire world is holy ground" - Alphonse Bihr.

From a Letter by the Secretary General Regarding
Membership
Autumn 1990 & 1994 |
In regard to membership in the Theosophical Society, we like to
correspond with applicants to be assured that they understand the
Society's altruistic objectives; for no good is achieved for the individual,
or for the Society, if one becomes a member in the mistaken belief
that he will be instructed in psychism, magic, use of mantrams, meditation
regimes, and the like. We do not deny the validity of these, but regard
their investigation or practice as of small worth compared to the
main purpose of the T.S. which is to replenish the spiritual thought-life
of humanity. When this course is pursued unselfishly and for the benefit
of all, we feel that self-improvement and strengthening of character
occurs naturally. Let Christians remain Christians, Parsis, Parsis,
Buddhists, Buddhists, and so forth, but let them and all of us see
the universality of life and the responsibility of man as part of
the universal brotherhood of all things.
- Kirby Van Mater, Pasadena, May 7th 1990 |
